Things I LOVE About San Diego

April 19, 2017

I normally write about fitness stuff but this is the happiest place on earth, so thought I'd shout about it.

Best authentic Mexican food

We are pretty much in Mexico after all. When ordering in some of the better taco shops, it’s always amusing when they can’t understand me because I don’t speak Spanish.

Limitless mountain trails

To the east of San Diego is a vast range of beautiful mountains. Just 30-60 minutes in the car will get you to any type of trail you like, from easy, dog-friendly routes to hard, technical bouldering.

Super efficient road system

Driving and parking anywhere is really easy. Even rush hour is a breeze compared to London.

Stunning beaches and coastline parks

The waterfront is packed full of breathtaking scenery for many miles all the way from Coronado to Carlsbad. The water is clean and swimmable in all year round although San Diegan’s seem to think it’s too cold for that.

Sunny, warm and beautiful…

…all the time! Again, unless you ask someone who’s lived here for some time, in which case you’ll hear laughable complaints of how bad the winter was and how it’s so chilly sometimes.

People are warm and friendly

They actually seem to care how you are doing when they pass you on the street. I’ve never been much of a hugger, but I just want to hug everyone I meet. There are no bad vibes or bad attitude, ever. I love everyone!

Holiday destination

It’s great to live somewhere where people vacation.

Superb water sports options

Stand up paddle boarding, waterskiing, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, bodyboarding. You name it, you can do it in San Diego.

International

In the state of Georgia, even if I wore baggy jeans and a t-shirt with a fish on it, blending in is hard work because as soon as I start talking people just stare at me. Here in San Diego I can speak without creating a scene.

Religion and Politics

People never talk about either of these sensitive subjects. San Diego is A-religious and A-political so people don’t try to press their views onto others and everyone gets along. Perfect!

Loves military

Being a former Bootneck, I get my haircut for just $8 and can gain entry into various attractions for free. Thank you America!

One of the cleanest ports in America

Because it is home to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, San Diego one of the busiest ports in the world. Normally, this would mean a lot of pollution, but thanks to the constant sunshine the ships switch off their engines and plug into solar energy when they’re docked. Although the roads are busy, the air smells very clean, especially coming from London.

Craft beer capital of California

There are micro-breweries everywhere!

Avocados are $0.50

Compared to £2.50 ($3.50) in the U.K.

Gas is cheap!

If you ask an American, it’s shockingly expensive. But coming from a place where it’s literally four times the price, it’s cheap.

Anchorman was filmed here…

…which always brings a smile to my face. “You stay classy, San Diego”

Luke Skywalker lives here somewhere

The force feels very strong in San Diego.

Cool wildlife

We’re surrounded by rattlesnakes, black widow spiders, coyotes, mountain lions and Great White sharks. Yay!

Work-to-play attitude

People seem to work just enough to fund a life of mostly play. Not being busy is totally cool. This is the complete opposite of London’s work-work-work and starve-yourself-of-sleep-so-you-can-do-more-work culture.

Customer service

It’s on a completely different level than the BS I’m used to in the U.K. Calling my car insurance company used to be a nightmare, now it’s a delight. Customer service in all other areas is vastly superior as well.

Wine

Oaky buttery California chardonnay. Mmmm, makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The reds are pretty danged good too.

Having said all that, we may have to turn around and go back to the UK. The cheese here sucks but we can do without that. The deal breaker is a lack of Marmite. Seriously, our supplies will run out in a few weeks, then we’re completed buggered.
